A Linked Past. A Shared Future

On Friday 8 May 2026, Victoria College marked a deeply meaningful moment in its history with the formal twinning of the College and the Salvatorkolleg in Bad Wurzach.
Arranged by the schools and the Partnerschaft Committees of both Bad Wurzach and St Helier, this twinning marks an important expansion of the 2002 town partnership, with a renewed focus on education and cultural exchange. It aims to ensure that the partnership continues to thrive, with new generations of students actively involved in sustaining this shared legacy. As well as recognising family connections to the Jersey internees within the College community, the twinning also commemorates Mr Crumpton, the College Gardien, who was among those deported to Germany.
To mark this important occasion, a plaque and information wall were unveiled in the presence of members of the Partnerschaft Committee, former internees, the Connétable of St Helier, Simon Crowcroft, and The Bailiff, Mr Robert McRae.
Speaking at the event, the Bailiff reminded us why such acts of remembrance matter, saying that “today ensures the message of liberation lives on and the suffering will never be forgotten.”
A particularly moving contribution came from the Salvatorkolleg, who not only sent their flag to be flown at Victoria College, but also shared words that were read aloud during the ceremony, “....and now there is hope that young people will learn from this and that peace is not to be taken for granted. We hope that a multitude of common projects will forge new links between the communities and will help to carry the Partnerschaft into the future.”
A powerful centrepiece of the new display was also unveiled: a suitcase made in Bad Wurzach by a Jewish prisoner from Belsen, now donated to the College. It stands as a tangible connection between places, lives and histories, and as a focal point for learning and reflection.
The event concluded with tea and cake in the Headteacher’s office, allowing guests to talk, reflect and share memories.
We would like to offer particular thanks to our three internees - Lola, Hazel and Tony -whose presence and contributions today helped bring the day together with such care and dignity.
Looking ahead, a visit to Bad Wurzach is planned for October, with a further exchange already envisaged for 2027, ensuring that this partnership continues not only as an act of remembrance, but as a living, forward‑looking collaboration.
