National Cadets Week – Victoria College CCF

Contingent Commander, Emma Davies outlines the unique set of opportunities that joining the Combined Cadet Force (CCF) brings.

Cadet training has been part of life at Victoria College for over a century. Its roots reach back to the mid-nineteenth century, when a Cadet Corps was established. This ultimately evolved into an Officer Training Corps in 1908. Many former pupils would go on to serve during the Great War, and five were awarded the Victoria Cross, the highest military honour for gallantry. Their legacy remains woven into the school's history through our House System and reflects values of courage, commitment and integrity that are represented in our military values today.

More than fifty years have now passed since the establishment of the school's tri-service Combined Cadet Force. During that time, thousands of young people have taken part, discovering new interests, developing valuable skills and creating lasting memories. While the CCF has evolved alongside both the school and the island’s broader culture, its enduring success lies in the opportunities it offers young people to challenge themselves, work with others and grow in confidence.

Today, the contingent is thriving, with more than 100 cadets taking part across the Royal Navy, Army and Royal Air Force sections. They are supported by a dedicated team of adult volunteers whose experience spans the armed forces, education and a wide range of professional backgrounds. Their commitment, enthusiasm and willingness to give their time make possible the rich programme of activities that cadets enjoy throughout the year.

For many of our cadets, some of the most memorable experiences come from trips, camps and off-island competitions. Whether spending time in the field, taking part in adventurous training, visiting military establishments or developing specialist skills, these experiences provide challenge, responsibility and fun. Opportunities also exist to attend courses and gain nationally recognised qualifications, helping cadets build skills that will serve them well beyond school.

Leadership sits at the heart of the cadet experience. From leading small teams on regular parades to organising on-site activities and mentoring younger cadets, cadets at Victoria College CCF are encouraged to take responsibility and develop the confidence to lead others. The experience gained in doing so is invaluable, fostering qualities that are equally relevant in education, employment and community life.

Perhaps above all, the CCF is an organisation that gives our cadets a sense of belonging. It offers experiences that cannot easily be replicated elsewhere in school life: adventure, challenge, teamwork, friendship and a sense of achievement earned through effort and commitment.
