New Staff 2022

At the start of the 2022 academic year, we were delighted to welcome a number of new teaching and non-teaching staff who bring a wealth of experience and knowledge to our College Community.

Anya Martins

What is your job title?  

ELSA (Emotional Literacy Support Assistant.) 

Brief description of what your job involves?  

Planning and delivering interventions to support the social, emotional needs and development of our students supporting everything from bereavement and anxiety to self-esteem and anger management.  

Short description of where you were previously working?  

Just down the hill at Victoria College Preparatory School (VCP). 

Why did you choose Victoria College?  

When I saw the role of ELSA for Victoria College advertised, I knew it was the right move for me. I know, and have worked with, a lot of the boys from VCP already and it seemed like a natural progression for me. 

Best thing about working at Victoria College so far?  

All the staff and boys are so friendly, welcoming, and supportive. 

Interesting/fun fact about yourself?  

Out of school hours, I am a Marine Mammal Medic for the charity BDMLR (British Divers Marine Life Rescue) which keeps me busy, especially during the wet and windy weather. 

Tell us about your hobbies 

Apart from the usual household chores? I love Hatha yoga and spending quality time with my family and two rescue dogs. 

Ben Philp

What is your job title?  

Music and Drama Technician 

Brief description of what your job involves?  

My job involves making sure all music and drama events look and sound perfect. I'll work on events such as the school production and House Music as well as weekly assemblies and the weekly newsletter video. 

Short description of where you were previously working?  

I finished studying for my A Levels in June 2022 and worked for the Government of Jersey over the summer in their Marketing, Digital and Design team. 

Why did you choose Victoria College?  

I chose Victoria College as I wanted to use my skills and knowledge to develop systems to further the technical capabilities of the school when it comes to planning and producing events. 

Best thing about working at Victoria College so far?  

The best thing about working at Victoria College so far has been the students, they are endlessly polite and respectful and are always willing to help. 

Having now worked here for a short time, one thing you would change about Victoria College?  

Having worked at Victoria College for a short time now, I wouldn't change much, it's a great place for students and staff alike. 

Interesting/fun fact about yourself?  

A fun fact about myself is that (as far as we know) I am the first person to play for both sides of the Prefects v Teachers football match. 

Tell us about your hobbies  

I am a big F1 fan and enjoy watching the races in my spare time. 

Catherine Woodward

What is your job title? 

Teacher of Biology and Mathematics 

 Brief description of what your job involves?   

I aim to inspire young people to take up a role in STEM based careers, through practical activities. In science we undertake a range of tasks designed to build transferable skills and spark a life-long love of science and scientific enquiry. 

Short description of where you were previously working?  

Northern Cyprus teaching science in an international school. 

Why did you choose Victoria College?   

I share the same values and ethos of kindness and respect. 

Best thing about working at Victoria College so far?   

Getting the opportunity to see how well boys do in a single sex environment as well as volunteering to support the Combined Cadet Force (CCF) programme. 

Interesting/fun fact about yourself?   

I spent 3 years living in Northern Cyprus where I started my teaching career. I enjoyed the lifestyle, culture and home cooked Cypriot food - I can now make delicious Dolma and Baklava! 

Tell us about your hobbies 

I enjoy doing anything that is calm and relaxing including yoga and meditation.  

What do you enjoy most about living in Jersey? 

The sun, the sea and surfing. 

Clare Scott

What is your job title?  

I would like to introduce myself as the new SENDCo, and I am responsible for overseeing the smooth running and the continued development of the Student Support Department. 

Brief description of what your job involves?   

The area around learning support and wellbeing is ever evolving and I work with Teaching Assistants, teachers, and the leadership team to ensure that we, as a school, are up to date with all the latest initiatives and research in this area. This is so that we can ensure that the students in our charge are able to access the best support. My department will continue to look at ways of ensuring we have the best resources to support the students’ wellbeing and focus on their positive mental health. This involves working closely with all the outside agencies that Jersey has on offer to support in this area. 

I welcome open dialogue with both students and their parents, as I believe that when we all work together in the best interest of the young people in our care that we can achieve the most positive outcomes. 

Short description of where you were previously working?  

I previously set up the Learning Support Department at Beaulieu Convent School in Jersey and ran it for several years. I took a step back due to family commitments but continued to support the department. I have also worked with students with additional needs in London and Switzerland. 

Why did you choose Victoria College?   

With my own sons flying the nest, I am ready for a new challenge, and I was delighted to be offered this wonderful opportunity to take on the role of SENDCo at Victoria College. I am looking forward to all the challenges this new role will bring. 

Best thing about working at Victoria College so far?   

Everybody has been so friendly and welcoming, and the students have been so polite and kind which I have appreciated greatly. There is such a positive energy around the school.  I encourage them to drop into Vibert to introduce themselves if they have not already done so. 

Interesting/fun fact about yourself?   

I have been known to tread the boards in the amateur dramatics scene when I have the time. 

Tell us about your hobbies 

I enjoy keeping fit by going to the gym, swimming, playing tennis and going on long walks in the beautiful countryside and on the beaches with my dog. My other passion is the theatre, whether this means attending the wide variety of local performances or sneaking off to London to enjoy the many productions in the West End. I also enjoy travelling to different parts of the world, my favourites being Italy, France and the beautiful island of Madeira. 

Didier Gicquel

What is your job title? 

Senior Technician for Design & Technology (DT) and Art. 

Brief description of what your job involves? 

I make things and know stuff! Joking. I try to keep things ticking along smoothly throughout the department and provide assistance to staff and students during lessons in class and the workshop. I also work closely with the students during the design and build process of their projects. 

Short description of where you were previously working? 

I was previously self-employed in property maintenance and decorating but my original background was in catering where I was a hotel manager for 9 years over a 14-year period which included 6 years training in all departments. 

Why did you choose Victoria College? 

Victoria College sort of chose me. I came to help when help was needed and now I am here permanently. 

Best thing about working at Victoria College so far? 

The atmosphere! There is an amazing team in the Design Technology department, and I have a great time. The boys we teach are an awesome bunch! 

Interesting/fun fact about yourself? 

I have a very large, some say dirty, Star Wars habit with a 1000-piece collection big enough to start a museum.  

Tell us about your hobbies 

My hobbies are many and varied and range between scuba diving, underwater photography, surfing, snowboarding/skiing (which has had a back seat for a while) and model, prop cosplay building.  

Eimear Pallot

What is your job title? 

Teacher of Chemistry 

Brief description of what your job involves? 

From an academic perspective, teaching Chemistry to all Key Stages and Biology to Key Stage 3. From a pastoral perspective, helping to prepare my tutor group (Year 12) for life after school. 

Short description of where you were previously working? 

Prior to teaching I worked as an Analytical Chemist both in the UK at the LGC, a leading life science tools company, and at the States Analyst Laboratory in Jersey. Since changing career to teaching I have taught Science at two other schools on the island, before moving to Victoria College to focus on Chemistry. 

Why did you choose Victoria College? 

Victoria College gave me the opportunity to specialise in teaching Chemistry and also the new challenge of teaching all boys! 

Best thing about working at Victoria College so far? 

The kind and supportive community. 

Interesting/fun fact about yourself? 

In 2020 I was due to run the London Marathon, however due to COVID it was cancelled. Instead, I ran a “lockdown” marathon where I ran 2 hours out and about (following the government guidelines!) and completed the remainder by doing 460 laps (17 km) of my garden! 

Tell us about your hobbies 

I am a keen runner; I have run several marathons and completed a couple of triathlons. I enjoy hiking, have done the Island Walk five times and have climbed several mountains including Kilimanjaro in Tanzania and Kinabalu in Malaysian Borneo. This year I am hoping to do my first ultra-marathon, 100 km from London to Brighton. I also have a passion for scuba diving, hold the PADI advanced open water certification and have dived in numerous countries around the world. 

Emily Sweeny

What is your job title? 

Foundation, Alumni & Website Officer 

Brief description of what your job involves?  

Promoting the influence of the Victoria College Foundation and developing its aims to provide financial support to students. Also, maintaining the relationship with the Old Victorians Association and promoting its work both inside and outside of College. 

Short description of where you were previously working?  

Webreality, Client & Project Manager 

Why did you choose Victoria College? 

Working at Victoria College was an opportunity I didn't think would come around very often. It’s my first time working in a school and, although it's been quite an adjustment, I can't remember what life was like before. 

Best thing about working at Victoria College so far?  

The squirrels! Just kidding - it's a very fulfilling place to work. It's nice to know you have a little bit of input in making a difference to a young person's life. 

Interesting/fun fact about yourself? 

In my free time I volunteer for the RNLI Jersey media and fundraising team. Even though volunteering is hard work, I would recommend it to anyone because it's such great fun and keeps your heart full. 

Tell us about your hobbies 

I love going on dog walking adventures with my two crazy spaniels and spending time in the gym. 

Emma Aikenhead

Your job title? 

Head of Design Technology 

Short description of what your job involves?  

Running a team of enthusiastic and experienced staff comprising teachers and technicians. Teaching all year groups including GCSE and A Level. I am also a Year 10 tutor. 

Short description of where you were previously working?  

I trained at Bishop Wordsworth’s Grammar School in Salisbury and have taught in Hampshire schools ever since. My last school was Winchester College where I had a fabulous 5 years teaching, providing pastoral care and helping with golf provision at the school. 

Interesting/fun fact about yourself? 

I have lived in eight different countries and learned 5 of those languages (6 if I include English!). 

Best thing about working at Victoria College so far?  

The best thing about Victoria College so far is a tie between my membership of Dunlop house and friendliness of all the staff. 

Jack Wareing

What is your job title? 

Teacher of History 

Brief description of what your job involves?   

To educate and inspire the next generation of historical thinkers 

Short description of where you were previously working?  

I have taught in a variety of schools in England. Focused on raising achievement, I have gained a huge amount of experience teaching a wide variety of abilities. Most recently, I worked at an all-boys Catholic school in Liverpool.   

Why did you choose Victoria College?   

Victoria College is a school of international quality, with a staff and student base that inspire quality, achievement, and aspiration. 

Best thing about working at Victoria College so far?   

The staff create a warm, welcoming environment; the College is dedicated to delivering the highest standards for every student. 

Interesting/fun fact about yourself?   

I have performed as a professional magician. 

Tell us about your hobbies 

I enjoy basketball, gaming, drawing, singing, music and painting. 

What do you enjoy most about living in Jersey? 

As someone who has recently moved to Jersey, I love the emphasis on community, working together to create a safe, friendly, cooperative environment. Additionally, the culture of kindness throughout the island is palpable, making it an accessible and joyous place to live. Furthermore, as a historian the living history that is embedded in every aspect of the island is tantalising. 

Jackie Le Cornu

What is your job title?

Teaching Assistant 

Brief description of what your job involves?

Assisting students with SEND with their academic learning.  

Short description of where you were previously working?

I used to work at Rouge Bouillon School where I supported Year 2 students.  

Why did you choose Victoria College?

I wanted to further my knowledge of children and young people with SEND.  

Best thing about working at Victoria College so far?

Being part of a team and the communication between colleagues. 

Interesting/fun fact about yourself?

I worked as a Florist in New York! 

Tell us about your hobbies

I love flowers – I am a qualified florist but now I just work with flowers for fun! Most recently I decorated the Victoria College Great Hall and entrance area for our 170th Anniversary Ball. 

Laura Syvret

What is your job title?  

Teacher of Art 

Brief description of what your job involves?   

Guiding students through their exploration of different art disciplines and developing each individual's creative expression.  

Short description of where you were previously working?  

I previously completed my teacher training at Victoria College, with a focus on Design & Technology. After this, I secured a position at Grainville School where I was able to follow my main ambition to teach Art, before returning to Victoria College’s Art Department for this academic year. 

Why did you choose Victoria College?   

I was a Jersey College for Girls student myself and really appreciate the ambitious and kind culture of the school.  The art department is just down the corridor from where I studied art and I really believe it’s a place where students can flourish. 

Best thing about working at Victoria College so far?  

The students at Victoria College have so much creative courage! I feel very lucky to be here and genuinely inspired by the art that we explore every day.  

Interesting/fun fact about yourself? 

 I am also trained in Silversmithing and Jewellery Design. 

Tell us about your hobbies 

Aside from painting and silversmithing, I am a big family person and love to be outdoors. Most of my weekends are spent on walks, being Aunty to my niece and nephew, and sea swimming (all year round).  

Michelle Findlay

What is your job title? 

LSA (Learning Support Assistant) & ELSA (Emotional Literacy Support Assistant) 

Brief description of what your job involves?   

Supporting SEND students with their academic learning; also supporting students with social and emotional needs through planned interventions. 

Short description of where you were previously working?  

I worked as a Teaching Assistant at Plat Douet School for fifteen years specialising in behaviour, trauma and emotional support.  Within the last year I spent a ten-month secondment working with SEMHIT (Social Emotional Mental Health Inclusion Team). 

Why did you choose Victoria College?   

Victoria College seemed the perfect opportunity to progress to secondary school, a move I had been considering for some time. 

Best thing about working at Victoria College so far?   

The staff and students have been so welcoming and friendly. I am enjoying being part of the SENDCo Team. 

Interesting/fun fact about yourself?   

Prior to working in education I worked for a travel company travelling to many exotic destinations, my favourite being Mustique where I stayed in a luxury villa owned by Princess Margaret. 

Tell us about your hobbies 

I love horse riding, especially in France when visiting my family and friends. I also really enjoy walking and regularly walk with friends. 

Sakina Mithani 

What is your job title? 

Teacher of Mathematics 

Brief description of what your job involves?   

Teaching Mathematics to students at the College. From angelic Year 7s to hardworking Year 11s, and all between. 

Short description of where you were previously working?  

I have a degree in Economics BSc from the University of Greenwich, London and a PGCE from the Goldsmiths, University of London. Having worked initially in management consultancy and the hospitality industry, I retrained to be a teacher during the pandemic which gave me experience with online teaching and learning, as well as traditional classroom teaching.  

Why did you choose Victoria College?   

A school rich in history, beautiful views, supportive staff and respectful students. What more could I ask for? 

Best thing about working at Victoria College so far?   

How polite the students are and how supportive the staff are. I’m sure there’s a link connecting the two! 

Interesting/fun fact about yourself?   

I have a young baby, my first, who is the apple of my eye! She’s an absolute delight and puts me in a fantastic mood every morning. 

Tell us about your hobbies 

My number one favourite thing to do is play with my baby, but I also love exploring the island, getting involved in the community and embracing life on this wonderful ‘rock’. 

What do you enjoy most about living in Jersey? 

The views are fantastic; it’s such a wonderful mood boost. The people here in Jersey are so friendly too, not what I expected having moved here from bustling London! 

Susan Haynes

What is your job title?  

Finance Officer 

Brief description of what your job involves?  

Predominantly I send out fee invoices and ensure payments have been received. However, I do help out with other ad hoc duties within the office. 

Short description of where you were previously working?  

Previously I worked in Finance in the hospitality sector.  

Why did you choose Victoria College?  

I heard it was a lovely place to work and really wanted to get back into a school environment.

The people.

I can wiggle my ears without touching them.

Tim Hutton

What is your job title? 

Head of Business and Trident 

Brief description of what your job involves?  

Teaching business studies to Year 12 and 13 pupils covering a range of topics including business functions and management and strategy. I also coordinate the Trident program at the College which sees pupils carry out a 2-week work placement during Year 10. 

Short description of where you were previously working?  

In my previous role I was Head of Business and Finance at Hautlieu School. Prior to moving to Jersey in 2020 I worked as Head of Department at St Andrew's School in Kenya where my family and I lived for 2 years before moving to Jersey. 

Why did you choose Victoria College? 

Victoria College holds a strong reputation as a school which develops well-rounded young men and provides fantastic opportunities for pupils both academically and pastorally as well as enriching education through co-curricular activities. As a parent I saw first-hand the ethos of the school and wanted to work in such a positive environment. 

Best thing about working at Victoria College so far?  

As business is only taught at Sixth Form at present, I teach a limited number of classes but see each one every day. This has enabled me to get to know the students well and develop a positive rapport with them very quickly. The welcome of the staff has been fantastic, and I have settled into the role very quickly. 

Interesting/fun fact about yourself? 

As a keen golfer, I achieved my first and only ever hole-in-one aged 13. I haven't replicated it since. 

Tell us about your hobbies 

Since moving to Jersey, I have taken up triathlons and completed my first Olympic distance in 2022. I plan on completing more triathlons this year and plan to attend the Mont Saint Michel triathlon in October 2023. I also enjoy spending time with family and friends enjoying all of what Jersey has to offer, particularly sea-based sports and activities. 

Tom Broad

What is your job title?  

Teacher of Physics 

Brief description of what your job involves?   

Teaching physics to all year groups, I am a Braithwaite House form tutor and I teach KS3 maths. 

Short description of where you were previously working?  

Horsforth School in Leeds for 3 years. 

Why did you choose Victoria College?  

It is a very impressive school with a great community and Sixth Form.

The welcoming and supportive students and staff. 

Interesting/fun fact about yourself?  

I came to Jersey on holiday and liked it so much that I moved here.

I enjoy spending time with friends and family. 

What do you enjoy most about living in Jersey? 

The warmer weather, more sunlight hours, and seeing the sea although the seagulls are very frustrating.
