All Years, Dinner Table Discussions
To enable parents to have a better idea of what our KS3 students are studying in their PSHE lessons and to spread these conversations out of the classroom and into the home, we would be delighted if you could adopt our dinner table discussions into your weekly schedule.
Each week there will be questions that you can ask your child, that will link into their learning from PSHE that week and hopefully prompt interesting conversations.
This week's questions:
Y7 - Why might girls feel embarrassed talking about periods? What can we do to make sure they don’t feel ashamed or embarrassed?
Y8 - Why is human trafficking and modern slavery still happening today? Can you think of any effective ways governments can solve this problem?
Y9 - What do freedom and capacity to consent mean? Why are they so important?

College Field has just about recovered from the recent storms and Y7 House Football is finally up and running on Fridays after school from 15.35 to 16.35pm.
If you visit the Sports homepage here and go to 'In-House Sports' you can find all the House sport there. The boys are to wear their House games kit and ensure they have shin pads and football boots to take part. If their House is not playing that week, then they are not to attend that Friday. Teams are chosen during tutor time and everyone is welcome to play and represent their house.
Upcoming fixtures this term can be found here.

Year 9, Duke of Edinburgh's Award Update
Of the 70 students enrolled, all should now have filled in what they are going to do for their 3 areas of skills, fitness and volunteering. Approximately a third of students have done so. Everyone should have completed their 3 month activities by Christmas so two thirds of the boys have not yet recorded what they are doing.
Examples of activities so far are as follows: walking dogs, doing Nana's garden, creating stop animation, gym work at home, chef course at Highlands, helping out at the football/rugby/hockey/tennis, beach litter picks, practising a musical instrument, looking after pet snakes and lizards, Olio app and reducing food waste, BMXing, chess club, learning guitar at home and French Duolingo.
Keeping evidence is important especially if they do not have a formal assessor like for cooking at home or home gym work. Some people have already uploaded 4 meals they have cooked, strava routes they have walked or cycled, pictures of rubbish collected and screen shots of progress in their online classes. If they have a coach or a teacher, it's easy to upload an assessor report. Oherwise they will need evidence and will then need to speak to their form tutor or Mrs Blackmore to get help. Remember that family members or people under 18 cannot write assessor reports.
There were 3 boys who gave in their forms quite late and for whom we need to purchase them a place and then enrol them. This is underway. Please email Mrs Blackmore, (m.blackmore@vcj.sch.je) if you have any queries.
If any Y9 students would like to improve their knowledge of First Aid for their 3 monthly skill, we can run a part online and part practical course during a lunchtime. At the end of the 3 months, the students will take a practical test with a suitably qualified person. Please ask Mrs Blackmore for more information.

Years 12 & 13, 'Movember'
In recent years, a number of Victoria College and Victoria College Preparatory School staff have taken part in ‘Movember’, an annual event involving the growing of moustaches during the month of November to raise awareness of men's health issues, such as prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and men's suicide. We are once again taking part this year, growing moustaches of varying sizes, shapes and quality, and we are also inviting our Sixth Form students to take part. We are hopeful that our continued efforts to support this event will encourage young people to be open to discussing and tackling such problems.
If Sixth Form students would still like to take part in this wonderful initiative, they should let Mr Falle know that they would like to sign up. It's never too late. We are also asking that all participants contribute a minimum of £10 to our fundraising efforts, the same amount that staff have paid. This can either be paid in cash or using our online donation page. We are arranging photos during 'Movember' so that we can track the progress being made by those taking part. Those not participating should continue to adhere to the usual Sixth Form policy for facial hair.
Money raised will be donated to Movember UK. You can find out more about the work that they do to support Men’s Health here. Should you wish to support the Victoria College students and staff with their fundraising by donating, then you can do so here.
As always, please do not hesitate to contact Head of Sixth Form, Mr Falle, via e-mail (a.falle@vcj.sch.je) should you wish to discuss this further.
