Headmaster's Welcome

Victoria College is a very special school with a proud history and a commitment to excellence. All our teachers are dedicated to helping the boys gain the skills, knowledge and creative thinking that will enable them to work independently and equip them for an ever-changing world.  We have a strong academic tradition which is underpinned by a caring pastoral system. The House structure provides a real sense of identity and we firmly believe in providing an eclectic mix of co-curricular activities. We encourage all our students to contribute fully to the life of the School and to make the very most of the opportunities available.

We strive for excellence in all that we offer and we aim to ensure that all boys leave us as well rounded, balanced individuals.  We hope that you will find what you want from the website but there is no substitute for seeing the school. Please pay us a visit to meet the students and staff, and experience for yourself the unique atmosphere. I very much look forward to meeting you.

Alun Watkins

Alun Watkins was born and educated in Newport, South Wales.  Following a four year BEd Hons course at Exeter University, he joined Downside School, a boarding school near Bath run by Benedictine Monks. He taught biology, was an assistant Housemaster and coached the school's 1st XV.  In the early 1980ss he combined his teaching with a playing career in rugby at the prolific Bath Rugby Football Club. In 1989, Alun moved from Downside to become head of biology at Abingdon School but his responsibilities quickly expanded to include Head of Sixth Form and Master in Charge of Rugby.  Having completed a two-year part time MEd at Oxford, Alun rose through the ranks at Abingdon, first to become Upper Master and then Deputy Head Pastoral.
