News flash from Bisley

Victoria College Shooting Team July 2018
The Shooting Team has had a very successful time at the Schools' Meeting taking place at the National Shooting Centre at Bisley this week. This is the culmination of the shooting year which sees over 50 schools taking part in outdoor Fullbore shooting at distances up to 600 yards.

Throughout the week, the boys have been working hard, improving day by day and really coming together as a team.

The focus of the week is the Ashburton Inter-Schools Competition which took place on Thursday. Our team of eight, led by Captain of Shooting Thomas De La Cour, performed very well with the MOD 7. 62 Target Rifle.

Alongside this team, we also had a team of four, a pair and a reserve shooting in separate competitions.

Once the results started coming in it was clear that all the boys had done very well and had exceeded all our expectations.

The Ashburton Team set a new College record with a score of 756 with 52 V-Bulls.

This gained them a solid second place overall…our highest finish since the same placing in 1962.

With this success, we also won the much coveted Haines Shield back from Elizabeth College, Guernsey after its two year spell away. Our score, combined with the OV's score from their match against the OE's, saw us win the Inter-Insular competition.

Our team of four came a creditable 6th; the pair just missed out with a 4th
place; and Jonathan Marett saved his best for the last day and was also
placed a very respectable 4th.

Six of the team also finished in the top 100 cadets, another record for the
College in recent years.

The boys now stay on at Bisley and join the Jersey Rifle Association to shoot at the Imperial Meeting.

They have made a tremendous start by winning the Cadet National match today.

With three boys selected for the Channel Islands Team, and two in the Welsh Team, the current standard of shooting is clearly high.

None of this would be possible without the dedication and commitment of our volunteer Shooting Coaches, Richard Benest and Mary Norman.

The time and effort they have dedicated to get the boys to this level is nothing short of amazing and something for which the College is immensely grateful. We are also grateful to the OV's and JRA for their continued
support of our team, and a special mention and thanks must also go to Douglas Genders, OV.

It is also worth noting that this is a very young team with 10 of the 15 boys currently in Years 9 and 10.

The future is certainly bright - and we offer the congratulations of the Victoria College community to our shooting team for their outstanding efforts and well-deserved success.
