All Years, Reading at Victoria College
We are very pleased to reintroduce a quiet reading session for one afternoon a week for all students in Y7-11. This will form part of their tutor time schedule, and is a key strand in our goal to improve literacy and outcomes for all. There is no doubt that regular reading is directly linked to improved academic outcomes, but more than that, it's good for mental health too. All the boys have chosen a book to read, and some tutor groups have opted to do group reading.
As parents, you can support your son by making sure he has his reading book on the correct day, and by talking to him about his reading. Best of all, maybe you can read the book too, and then discuss what you liked about it with your son. It's worth remembering that a person who won't read is no better off than a person who can't read.
Reading days are:
Y7 - Tuesday
Y8 - Wednesday
Y9 - Wednesday
Y10 - Tuesday
Y11 - Tuesday

All Years, Grace Crocker Family Support Foundation's February Challenge
We will once again be taking part in the Grace Crocker Family Support Foundation's February Challenge, which will see students and staff walk, jog and run the equivalent distance from Jersey to Southampton Hospital, to raise funds and awareness for the Foundation. Staff and student teams will be entered and each student in Y7-11 will be taking part via their PE and games lessons, meaning that every student in those Year groups will contribute to this challenge in some way.
We will update everybody on our progress in the newsletter and via our social media pages throughout February. It would be great to see our wider community taking part in this in some way. You can enter as an individual or as a team using this Race Nation sign up page. Alternatively, you can support our fundraising efforts using this link. To find out more about the work that the Foundation takes on, visit their website.

All Years, Dinner Table Discussions
To enable parents to have a better idea of what our KS3 students are studying in their PSHE lessons and to spread these conversations out of the classroom and into the home, we would be delighted if you could adopt our dinner table discussions into your weekly schedule.
Each week there will be questions that you can ask your child, that will link into their learning from PSHE that week and hopefully prompt interesting conversations.
This week's questions:
Y7: Joint PSHE – which has been your favourite activity so far? How did you get on with your group this week?
Y8: How could you support a friend who has ‘come out’ to you?
Y9: Careers – What skills do you hold? How could you use these in the workplace?

Years 7-8, eSafety Evening, Wednesday 28 February, 6pm
Primarily aimed at Y6, 7 & 8 parents, the focus will include identifying the main risks your son will face online and how to address them with him. The evening will be a chance to discuss the major risks to safeguarding and wellbeing of our students, some of the ways we are seeking to address them within College, and how, as the adults in the conversation we can work together. The Senior Safeguarding Team will share important information and terminology to best equip parents in supporting and protecting their sons from some of the greatest online risk factors. NB this session will be largely similar to the one delivered last year. Please register for your free ticket here.
You will see from the results that the overwhelming majority of time spent online by our boys involves gaming. All parents will be interested to know that next week is the NSPCC’s Game Safe Festival.
