All Years, Parental Feedback on Internet Usage and Devices
As part of our Strategic Plan, we are committed to looking at the role that technology plays in learning, what that looks like at Victoria College and the impact on our students. With that in mind, this term sees the start of our turning our attention to this matter long term, and a starting point is to hear some parental views. This will help us plan our next steps, both in the short and long term, as well as help guide our training and strategic decisions moving forward.
Please help us by completing this short survey. If you have more than one son, please complete a separate survey for each.
Note that this survey will close at 5pm on Monday 29 January.

All Years, Medication Including Paracetamol
It is very important that pupils do not carry any medication with them over the school day (with the exception of adrenaline auto-injectors). Any medicine should be handed in to the medical bay in the morning, where it will be stored securely. Boys can access medicine as necessary. This guidance also applies to paracetamol, aspirin and ibuprofen.

A reminder, please, of the below steps that your son should take if he misplaces an item of his equipment. If something goes missing, please ask your son to:
- Retrace his steps (including break and lunchtimes)
- Look in the relevant locations list below, depending on his movements.
There are three main areas where boys’ things are left behind.
Sports Pavilion – if your son has left something in the changing rooms, it will typically stay there for a day or two just in case he goes back to look for it. Named items are returned. Unnamed items are routinely collected and moved to the main Lost Property Cupboard.
Langford Sports Centre – if your son has left something in these changing rooms, they are placed into the lost property store in Langford. Named items are returned. Unnamed items are routinely collected and moved to the main Lost Property Cupboard.
Rest of the College – any items of kit or equipment that are left behind in classrooms and other areas of the College are periodically gathered and placed in the Lost Property Cupboard in the main building. Named items are returned to the student. Unnamed items are left in the cupboard.
In the vast majority of cases, named items of clothing and equipment can be tracked down and returned to their owners. There is a large amount of unnamed and unclaimed equipment (see photo linked below) that will be placed on a table outside Reception tomorrow (Friday) for your son to peruse. Parents are welcome to view it after school.

All Years, Reading at Victoria College
We are very pleased to reintroduce a quiet reading session for one afternoon a week for all students in Y7-11. This will form part of their tutor time schedule, and is a key strand in our goal to improve literacy and outcomes for all. There is no doubt that regular reading is directly linked to improved academic outcomes, but more than that, it's good for mental health too. All the boys have chosen a book to read, and some tutor groups have opted to do group reading.
As parents, you can support your son by making sure he has his reading book on the correct day, and by talking to him about his reading. Best of all, maybe you can read the book too, and then discuss what you liked about it with your son. It's worth remembering that a person who won't read is no better off than a person who can't read.
Reading days are:
Y7 - Tuesday
Y8 - Wednesday
Y9 - Wednesday
Y10 - Tuesday
Y11 - Tuesday (starting in February)

All Years, Grace Crocker Family Support Foundation's February Challenge
We will once again be taking part in the Grace Crocker Family Support Foundation's February Challenge, which will see students and staff walk, jog and run the equivalent distance from Jersey to Southampton Hospital, to raise funds and awareness for the Foundation. Staff and student teams will be entered and each student in Y7-11 will be taking part via their PE and games lessons, meaning that every student in those Year groups will contribute to this challenge in some way.
We will update everybody on our progress in the newsletter and via our social media pages throughout February. It would be great to see our wider community taking part in this in some way. You can enter as an individual or as a team using this Race Nation sign up page. Alternatively, you can support our fundraising efforts using this link. To find out more about the work that the Foundation takes on, visit their website.

All Years, Dinner Table Discussions
To enable parents to have a better idea of what our KS3 students are studying in their PSHE lessons and to spread these conversations out of the classroom and into the home, we would be delighted if you could adopt our dinner table discussions into your weekly schedule.
Each week there will be questions that you can ask your child, that will link into their learning from PSHE that week and hopefully prompt interesting conversations.
This week's questions:
Y7: What is good mental health? What is a mental health problem?
Y8: Can you remember the law around sending or receiving nudes as a teenager? How might someone feel if they were being pressured into sending one?
Y9: Careers – what are your personal qualities? What kind of careers would you therefore suit?
