The Old Victorians' Association has long been a vital part of our community, connecting generations of alumni with each other and the College. As we look to the future, we want to build on this tradition and re-strengthen the OVA.

As an OV you are invited to be part of a crucial OVA Reboot event on Tuesday, 1st April 2025, from 5:00 PM – 8:00 PM in the Great Hall.

Now is the time to restore, rebuild, and revitalise. This is your opportunity to help shape the future of the OVA, have your say, and be part of its transformation.

Why Should You Attend?

• Reunite with fellow Old Victorians over drinks and nibbles.
• Share your thoughts on what the OVA should be and how it can better serve its members.
• Work together in professionally facilitated sessions to build a shared vision.
• Agree on a clear direction for the OVA based on alumni insights and discussion outcomes.

'Gareth has been a driving force behind work to deliver cultural change, improve wellbeing and pupil performance, and to increase the recruitment and retention of staff within Victoria College.

An amazing achievement that is well-deserved by Dr. Gareth Hughes who is leading the school with a clear vision of creating a world-class holistic education with a culture of kindness. 

With national grade tightening being widely reported this year, we are delighted that our students achieved on average over three quarters of a grade higher across all subjects compared to expectations. 25% of our students attained an average of at least a Grade 7 across their whole GCSE profile, and a quarter of all results obtained were at the very highest levels - Grades 8 or 9. 93% of grades awarded were 9 to 4 (which is the equivalent to previous A*-C grades).

Headteacher, Dr Gareth Hughes said “I am proud of our Year 11 students today as they receive their GCSE grades. Our boys have worked incredibly hard to achieve these results and displayed real resilience in overcoming a number of challenges as individuals and as a year group. Huge thanks go to the staff that guided the students brilliantly through their courses, and to our fantastic parental body that have supported so well. We look forward to welcoming many of the cohort back to join our Sixth Form, and we wish those heading off to explore new opportunities the very best for the future.”

It has been absolutely wonderful to see these trips back in the College calendar. Thank you to all staff involved with planning this adventure as well as those who accompanied the students. The students comments below, whilst still on the slopes, speak for themselves:

“I am really enjoying walking around the town and going to the supermarket because it’s very different to anything in Jersey. There are a lot of cool things” - Emil

“I have really loved sitting at the very peak of the mountain. It made me feel really joyful because of how beautiful and surreal the view was” - Malo

“I really enjoyed gliding down the slopes on my snowboard. Although being a beginner meant the first time was difficult, it has progressively got better” – James

“I’ve really loved racing my friends down the slopes, and watching my friends do some interesting falls. I’ve been very happy to help them when I can!” - Theo

Outstanding contributions from all involved - thank you to all those who took part and to Mr Murton, the Music Department and the wonderful Tech Team for the last two nights of spectacular entertainment!

They have received training, as Vic's PE teacher Adam Lester has been telling us:

"I have trained them up to deliver PE lessons, new, fun games related to physical literacy - so throwing and catching, kicking, but also to develop their behaviour management skills and their confidence and self-esteem in talking in front of pupils."

It has formed part of the college's Sixth Form Enrichment Programme, designed to help students develop additional life-skills in addition to their academic studies.

It is not going to be easy for them. Quite a few of the boys were quite nervous going into the first week but we've spent a couple of months training them up.  Once they got into the schools they realised it was a bit more relaxed and very swiftly got into the lessons.

They have found it a very positive experience." - Mr Lester.

The Sixth-Formers deliver 40 minute multi-sport lessons every Monday and Tuesday. 

Funding has come from government grant aimed at getting people active following the Covid pandemic.

The Connect Me: Connecting our Communities Grant Scheme offers up to £5,000 for projects that offer physical and mental health benefits.

The money has been used to buy equipment for the lessons that will then be donated to the primary schools at the end of the programme.

Victoria College Headteacher Dr Gareth Hughes is pleased the school has been able to help others in the community:

"One of the things that came off the back of the Covid pandemic is that Physical Education lessons were disproportionately affected. 

The time is right, now that the Covid rules and regulations have dropped away, to really invest back in young people's physical health and, by association. their mental wellbeing as well."

That was the message from Victoria College head Gareth Hughes after the launch of a pilot scheme between the school and Strive Health Club that aims to provide opportunities to pupils who are not participating in regular physical activity both inside and outside of school.
