Introduction and Welcome
An Introduction and welcome from new Headmaster - Alun
Watkins
Alun Watkins was born and educated in Newport, South
Wales. Following a four year BEd Hons course at Exeter
University, he joined Downside School, a boarding School near Bath
run by Benedictine Monks. At Downside, Alun taught Biology,
was an assistant Housemaster, and coached the school's 1st
XV. In the early 80's he combined his teaching with a playing
career in rugby at the prolific Bath Rugby Football Club. In
1989, Alun moved from Downside to become Head of Biology at
Abingdon School but his responsibilities quickly expanded to
include Head of Sixth Form and Master in Charge of Rugby.
Having completed a 2 year part time MEd at Oxford, Alun rose
through the ranks at Abingdon, first to become Upper Master and
then more recently, Deputy Head Pastoral. Alun is married to
Sue, herself an Assistant Head Teacher and they have four sons and
a 7 year old Labrador.
Commenting on his appointment as Head of Victoria College, Alun
said "I am absolutely thrilled to be succeeding Bob Cook as the
next Head of Victoria College. The school is renowned for
having high academic standards, real strength in extra-curricular
activities such as sport, music, drama and the CCF. Allied to
this of course, is a supportive pastoral care system.
My main focus will be to continue the good work of my
predecessor and to build on the excellent reputation of Victoria
College, both here and abroad. There is a real passion for
Victoria College from the boys, the staff, the parents, the
Governors and a very supportive Old Boys network. The school
is proud of its history, its achievements and its ethos. I am
looking forward to the challenge of leading a vibrant and caring
community".
